In a momentous occasion for the Indian Air Force (IAF), President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, conferred the prestigious President’s Standards and Colours to four IAF units on March 8th, 2024. This marked the first time in IAF history that such a ceremony honoured four units simultaneously, highlighting their exceptional service to the nation.

The President’s Standards and Colours represent the highest honour bestowed upon any military unit in India. This award recognizes the units’ exemplary record of operational excellence, unwavering dedication, and proven contribution during both peacetime and wartime scenarios.
The ceremony, held at the Hindan Air Force Station in Ghaziabad, witnessed the presentation of the President’s Standard to two fighter squadrons:
- No. 45 Squadron (The Flying Daggers): This squadron holds the distinction of being the IAF’s first Light Combat Aircraft Squadron.
- No. 221 Squadron (The Valiants): Known for their valiant service, this squadron has a rich history dating back to 1963.
The President’s Colours were awarded to two vital support units:
- 11 Base Repair Depot (BRD): This unit plays a crucial role in maintaining the IAF’s aircraft fleet, ensuring their operational readiness.
- 509 Signal Unit (SU): The 509 SU is responsible for establishing and maintaining secure communication networks, a critical element for successful air operations.
